Exclusions and Rejections for Invalid Service Line Procedure G8553.

Exclusions and Rejections for Invalid Service Line Procedure G8553.
As of January 1st, 2014 the G8553 code is no longer valid and will cause rejections or exclusions. The reporting period for this Electronic Prescribing (eRX) incentive code ended on December 31st, 2013.

The G8553 code was used to report the use of an eRX in CMS’s eRX Incentive program. The program is still in effect but the code was used for reporting on the services from June to December 2013 only. In 2014 those providers who did not have an eRX in 2012, or follow the guidelines for reporting with this code in 2013 will subject to assessment. For more information on the incentive program click here.

There are several other codes that where deleted as part 2014 HCPCS/CPT Procedure Codes codes updates on January 1, 2014.  The following link has these changes and the additional codes and description changes. 2014 HCPCS/CPT Update.

How do I fix the Exclusion?

Because the G8553 code was used to report the use of electronic prescribing, and isn’t used like a typical diagnosis code, simply remove the code from the visit and re-bill the claim.  When you run your claim submission wizard next the claim will go out again and will not get excluded for Invalid Service Line Procedure.
